Background
Studies indicate that 1 in 5 adults in the United States lack the literacy skills to function effectively. They can't read the newspaper or stories to their children, write letters or checks or fill out applications, and very often they can't find or keep jobs. Every day, doors are closed to them. But they can learn and improving their reading skills can change their lives.
Although basic funding for Literacy Plus is provided through the City of Hayward and the California Library Literacy Services Act, additional contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations enable us to maintain the activities needed to help as many people as possible overcome the crippling barrier of low literacy.
Everyone knows recycling is good for the environment, but did you know that recycling is also good forthe Literacy Plus program? We have recently partnered with Planet Green, a printer cartridge and cell phone remanufacturing and recycling company, to start an exciting new fundraiser that recycles mobile phones and used printer cartridges – and we want you to be part of it!
If you use an inkjet printer, each spent cartridge could earn Literacy Plus up to five dollars! Any old cell phones in your drawer? Those can make up to $40. One phone may not seem like much, but if you get your co-workers and family involved – recycling is a great way for everyone to go green, while raising money for a cause!
Taking part is easy – simply drop off your used inkjet cartridges and old cell phones with us – you can include cell phone batteries and even cell phone chargers. The drop-off location is the Hayward Public Library – Literacy Plus program.
Your participation in this recycling campaign will raise greatly needed funds for the Literacy Plus program.Let’s work together, one cartridge and cell phone at a time, to clean up the planet and raise money for a worthwhile cause!

Tiny Tickets Add Up to
BIG
Money
Our Tiny Ticket fund-raiser
has brought us a big windfall. So far we have received over
$8,300 from BART for the tickets that YOU have turned
in. Please continue to help! Tell your friends and associates
about
Tiny
Tickets, and collect them for us at work and at your meetings
and gatherings. These tickets are helping us to buy additional
tutoring materials that we need to help our tutors and learners.
You can drop off BART tickets with tiny (or any!) cash amounts
left on them into the collection jars at the Hayward Main or
Weekes Branch libraries or mail them directly to LITERACY PLUS,
835 C Street, Hayward, CA 94541.
